DeMarcus Cousins may be cut in favor of former Duke Star Mason Plumlee

Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins is having a great showing at Team USA Basketball training camp. The former Kentucky Wildcats star is looking to earn a spot on the final roster that will participate in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. He’s been one of the best players in practice consistently, and he’s also the one dominant big man the team has with so many other bigs having pulled out.

That might not be enough to get him on the final roster. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst believes Cousins will get passed over by former Duke star and current Brooklyn Nets center Mason Plumlee.

In case you forgot, current Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski is the Team USA head coach, so there is probably a little favoritism playing a part here if Plumlee does in fact get in over Cousins.

Coach K has at least been praiseworthy publicly of Cousins. He told this to Ailene Voisin of The Sacramento Bee:

(Cousins) has continued to get into better shape. We love the fact he’s committed. He’s trying like crazy. He’s come (to the training session) multiple times. That level of commitment is not just to be admired, it needs to be talked about.

Cousins is also battling former Wildcats all-American and current New Orleans Pelicans center/forward Anthony Davis for a spot. Depending on how Coach K wants to use Davis and Cousins, both of them could be starting.

Former Wildcats and current Washington Wizards point guard John Wall is also competing for a spot, meaning we could actually see some lineups featuring those three former Cats.

If Cousins doesn’t make the roster it probably isn’t all on Coach K. his likely starting point guard, Chris Paul, doesn’t have the best of relationships with Boogie.

Still, at some point you have put egos aside and focus on forming the best team. It’s hard to believe Plumlee over Cousins does that.
