The Kentucky Wildcats won’t be getting Diamond Stone.
The 5-star big man cut UK from his list on Thursday, which in theory, should’t be that big of a surprise. Kentucky is loaded at both center and power forward with non-seniors, including Willie Cauley-Stein, Dakari Johnson, Alex Poythress, Marcus Lee, Karl Towns, Derek Willis and Trey Lyles.
Even though UK figures to lose anywhere between 3-5 of those guys to next year’s NBA Draft, guys like Stone aren’t going to commit to a school loaded with so much talent this early in the recruiting process.
Basically, when Stone said he was announcing his decision in November, UK was figuratively cut from his list then. If he had waited until April to sign, he probably would have known by then who was going pro at UK. More than likely, enough will leave that Stone could have made a big impact on UK’s team in 2015.
Oh, and there’s the potential package deal with Malik Newman, who is also considering UK.
The 6’10″, 246 lbs. Milwaukee, WI big man originally said he plans to make his announcement during ESPN’s signing day special.
Before making that decision, Stone and his family plan to take all five official visits, though they haven’t yet decided on the schools. Connecticut, Duke, Oklahoma State, Michigan State and Wisconsin are his five finalists.
