This will be us next year, you guys.
For this year, they are right.
All the folks who loudly proclaimed that you couldn’t be successful with Freshmen. That shouted from their rooftops that UK would not be able to win National Championships with the kind of system that Cal was bringing in.
For this year, they were right. They said freshmen were too inconsistent, and this year, they were. Alex Poythress didn’t come in and “get it” like the freshmen who came before him. Archie Goodwin came around towards the end of the year, but by that time it was too late. Nerlens Noel got hurt, and Willie Cauley-Stein tried to fill his shoes, but just wasn’t quite the same without Nerlens in there.
They said you couldn’t start over with a roster every year and win it. For this year, that was true. With only Kyle Wiltjer coming back from last year’s team, this year’s team lacked a lot of continuity, and still at this point in the season don’t seem to be on the same page. There’s no built in leader, nobody to look to when times got tough. Julius Mays tried to assume the role, but the fact of the matter is he was a guy brought in for a year who should have been able to fill a role, but not the leader’s role.
The truth is, this year we saw the side the other side of the coin of the one-and-done system. With the 2012 class already being a weak class, combined with missing out on a few top 10 guys (Shabazz Mohammad, Anthony Bennett), then losing everyone from a Championship season, sandwiching this season between two of the potentially the best years in Kentucky basketball, putting them Preseason #3, and heaping similar expectations on them, well it was a recipe for disaster.
This year, everything that could possibly happen wrong, went wrong and now here we are, gearing up for a road game against Robert Morris to open up the NIT schedule.
You know what though? Last year, they were wrong. Last year we won the National Championship. Everything they said we couldn’t do, we did. Freshmen came in and were the best players on our team, and led us through the NCAA tournament field, beating several veteran teams on the way.
And you know what? They’ll be wrong again next year.
Next year, we’ll have guys from this year’s team back. Coupled with one of the best recruiting classes in the history of college basketball, next year’s team will be a tour of “We Remember Last Year”, while teams get completely rocked. Next year, we’ll be the ones laughing. Honestly, I think this year was the perfect storm to make sure that nothing is taken for granted next year. That’s bad news for you, bubba.
Get your shots in this year. Go ahead and get your “told you so” out of the way. Next year your laughter will sound a lot more like sobbing. And I can’t wait.
You were right this year. Enjoy it while it lasts, cause you’ll be wrong again before long.
Go Big Blue!
