Mark Stoops said on his radio show Monday that the extent of Jalen Whitlow’s injury is still unknown.

The x-rays came back negative and the staff is calling it a sprain, but he will be re-evaluated on Tuesday when the swelling has gone down.

Despite the uncertainty, Stoops said there’s a “good chance” that Whitlow misses the game against Mississippi State.

On a positive note, Stoops explained that Whitlow’s ankle was “better today than it was yesterday,” so the injury might not keep him out as long as originally feared.

With Whitlow out, Maxwell Smith will receive the majority of the reps during the Cats’ bye week. The staff will also evaluate Patrick Towles and Reese Phillips to determine who should be the No. 2 quarterback, though Stoops said Towles would be the guy right now.

We should have a better idea tomorrow of just how long Whitlow will be out. If it’s more than a couple of weeks, there’s a decent chance the redshirt may get pulled from Towles before the season’s over.
