The time is almost here for former Kentucky Wildcats forward Julius Randle to officially become an NBA player. The 2014 NBA raft takes place this Thursday, and Randle figures to hear his name called within the first 10 picks.
He would go even higher if not for concerns surrounding his right foot. Yahoo Sports originally reported Randle will likely require surgery on that foot after the NBA Draft in June. There may be on team in the Top 10 unfazed by this news.
The latest mock draft from ESPN’s Chad Ford pegged Randle to the Lakers, whom he says aren’t as concerned about his potential foot problems as others are.
Julius Randle went into the Lakers’ workout and ferociously tried to end any doubt about where he belongs in the draft. After facing numerous questions about foot surgery this summer, Randle was dominant in the workout.
Yes, Randle will likely have to have a minor procedure to clean up a rogue screw in his foot. But the Lakers reportedly aren’t as concerned as other teams. Marcus Smart seems to be the other strong contender for this pick. He came in for a second workout this weekend and had a strong one, but it looks like Randle has moved into the lead if the Lakers keep the pick.
The surgery would keep Randle sidelined six to eight weeks this summer, meaning he would the rookie summer league in July, but likely be ready for the start of training camp in the fall.
The surgery would be a precautionary procedure to remove a screw that was placed in his foot after it was fractured while he was a high school senior in Texas.
Hopefully for Randle, he’ll get drafted, play in the summer league, be ready for camp and go on to have a great rookie season with whatever team drafts him.
