Marcus Applefield could become a priority for the coaching staff moving forward…
Now as UK licks its wounds from missing on Brady Taylor, but celebrates landing Nick Richardson, the search continues for new OL targets for the 2014 class. When analyzing this, it’s important to take a step back and realize what you have already.
Let’s start with players who are Sophomores this year at UK, on down to current commits:
Jordan Swindle, Sophomore, Starting OT
Zach West, Sophomore, Starting OG or Center
Shaq Love, Sophomore, Offensive Guard
Jordan Watson, RS-Freshman, Offensive Guard
Jon Toth, RS-Freshman, OT or Center
Zach Myers, RS-Freshman, Starting OG or Center
Incoming Freshman OL’s:
Justin Day, Offensive Tackle
Kyle Meadows, Offensive Tackle
Ramsey Meyers, Offensive Guard
Nick Haynes, Offensive Tackle of Guard
That’s just your scholarship players, but you have solid walk-on options too, who are better than your average walk-on:
John Gruenschlaeger, Sophomore, Offensive Tackle, Guard
Bill Davis, Sophomore, Offensive Guard
Then you have the guys that are currently committed:
Jarrett LaRubbio, Offensive Guard
Derrick Kelly, Offensive Tackle
Nick Richardson, Offensive Tackle/Guard
That is at least 15 players that you have to work with for at least the next three years and beyond. From there, UK will look to fill 1-2 spots with guys like JUCO Avery Gennesy, Marcus Applefield, JUCO Adam Duckett, and maybe even guys like Andrew Harrell or Kagen Skidmore, though I think the latter would be more likely as walk-on options (Harrell less so). UK isn’t out of the running for Marcelys Jones, current Ohio State commit, either. (Glenville!!!!)
From there, though, Kentucky is already recruiting the 2015 class, and already has some options on the Offensive Line. Cody McPeek is a player who looks to be one of the top players in a loaded Kentucky 2015 class, and has already visited UK. Kentucky is also recruiting 4* George Brown out of Cincinnati, who is cousins with current UK commit Mike Edwards. Brown has visited UK multiple times and reportedly has a great relationship with Vince Marrow.
So, alas, though we have missed out on Brady Taylor and a few other top OL’s this season, it’s definitely not the end of the world. UK still has some great options for the 2014 class, already has solid depth for the next few years, and is in on some really talented players for the 2015 class. Oh, and they already have an OL, Landon Young, committed for the 2016 class.
Go Big Blue!
